The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, often called the Knights of Malta, the Order of St. John, or simply the Order, is a lay religious order of the Roman Catholic Church dating back to the middle of the eleventh century and currently based in Rome.  The Order has three national associations in the United States, the Western Association, the Federal Association and the American Association, with principal administrative offices located in San Francisco, Washington DC and New York respectively.

The Western Association has approximately 750 Knights, Dames and Chaplains residing throughout the western half of the United States, each of whom has taken an oath to practice and defend the Roman Catholic faith and to serve the poor and sick.  The Order’s invested members are supported in these efforts by hundreds of Auxiliary members – men, women and young adults who share the Order’s mission.

The Western Association runs free medical clinics in Los Angeles and Oakland, California for the poor and uninsured.  The Western Association also provides nursing services to parish communities in Los Angeles, Orange County, Phoenix and San Francisco.  The Western Association annually sponsors healing Masses in Los Angeles, Orange County, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle on the World Day of the Sick.  Every spring around the first of May, members of the Order from around the world, including roughly 250 from the Western Association, travel to Lourdes, France to care for men, women and children facing serious and often life-threatening physical challenges.  The Western Association and its invested and Auxiliary members provide financial and hands-on support to about 60 different projects that serve the poor, the sick, the homeless, the elderly, and others in need throughout the United States.  Finally, Western Association members assist in many of the Order’s worldwide projects, primarily operated under the Order’s world-wide relief organization, Malteser International.
