In the Western Association, the Order operates two free medical clinics and nurse programs in parishes in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Francisco, California and in Phoenix, Arizona.  The Western Association also provides financial assistance and volunteers to hospitals, medical centers and health programs operated by others.

The Order of Malta, Los Angeles Free Clinic, Inc., is located at 2222 West Ocean View Avenue, Suite 112, in the MacArthur Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.  Its phone number is (213) 384-4323.  The Order of Malta, Oakland Free Clinic, Inc. is located within the Cathedral of Christ the Light complex, at 2121 Harrison Street, Suite 120, Oakland, California.  Its phone number is (510) 587-3000.  Both are 501(c)(3) organizations that identify unmet medical needs, provide direct medical care when possible, and facilitate referrals to appropriate cooperating medical and social agencies.

Both clinics provide free medical care to the uninsured poor and sick.  The clinics offer physical exams, laboratory testing, x-rays, electrocardiograms, ultrasounds, and immunization.  Patients often suffer from chronic medical conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), and asthma.  The clinics provide immunizations for tetanus and influenza and tuberculosis skin testing.  The clinics do not perform surgery or other invasive procedures.

Each clinic is staffed by volunteer physicians and nurses.  For example, in the Oakland clinic, currently 12 physicians donate an average of six hours each week, 24 nurses donate an average of three hours each week, and four clerical volunteers assist with paperwork and provide translation services, as required, in three languages (Chinese, Spanish and Tagalog).   The Oakland clinic also has a nurse practioner on staff.
