The Western Association currently provides financial and hands-on support to the following projects in Oakland, CA:
Mercy Retirement and Care Center, located on Foothill Boulevard in Oakland and operated by the Sisters of Mercy, serves 160 elderly men and women who live in the Sisters Retirement Center or Care Center. Every Sunday, invested and Auxiliary members assist residents wishing to attend Mass in the Sisters’ chapel. The Order’s team also hosts an annual barbeque and regularly assist the Sisters in the ministry. Please contact John Rengel for additional information.
The Order of Malta, Oakland Free Clinic, Inc., located in the Cathedral of Christ the Light complex, at 2121 Harrison Street, Suite 102, Oakland, provides free medical care to the uninsured poor and sick. The clinic offers physical exams, laboratory testing, x-rays, electrocardiograms, ultrasounds, and immunization. It also serves patients suffering from chronic medical conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol), and asthma. The clinic provides immunizations for tetanus and influenza and tuberculosis skin testing. The clinic does not perform surgery or other invasive procedures. The clinic facilitates referrals to appropriate cooperating medical and social agencies. The clinic is staffed by volunteer physicians and nurses. Currently 12 physicians donate an average of six hours each week, 24 nurses donate an average of three hours each week, and four clerical volunteers assist with paperwork and provide translation services, as required, in three languages (Chinese, Spanish and Tagalog). The clinic also has a nurse practioner on staff.
