A Red, White and Blue Memorial Day Picnic 2007

By 7 AM, the bright skies of Memorial Day were filled with flavorful scents of BBQ floating around St. Anne’s Home in San Francisco. On Monday May 28, 2007, forty-six Knights and Dames together with 2 Provisionals, 4 Auxiliary and 13 volunteers gathered to prepare and serve a BBQ Picnic lunch for the residents of the Little Sisters of the Poor home for the elderly.

On Sunday in preparation for Memorial Day, traditional picnic salads and marinades were prepared by an enthusiastic and talented team of 22. These folks return year after year to cook and share time with the elderly and we are so grateful to each person for their continued involvement and dedication to the Little Sisters and the elderly.

Msgr. Steven Otellini celebrated the Mass for Justice and Peace. We prayed for those who sacrificed so much for the founding principles of our country and for the work of the Order in aiding the most needy to achieve dignity and justice.

With flags waving and people dressed festively, residents and members of the Order gathered to begin the part with refreshments served by Jeff Dito and his team. The patriotic atmosphere created for the residents by Francesca Madden and her team brought out the celebratory spirit in all present! With the assistance of many, everyone delighted in the great BBQ festivities, including a balloon-sculpting clown! Paul Voggelhiem led the crowd in rousing song bringing the day to a happy conclusion.

Co-Chairs Tony Sanchez-Corea Jr. and Laura Hosking are most grateful to fellow members for their energetic participation and to Mother Patricia for her continued enthusiastic hospitality to the Order of Malta. Please mark your calendars for our next event at St. Anne’s Home on October First, Lourdes Day!

  Cherry Blossom Festival

On Saturday, April 14, a group of Knights and Dames from the San Francisco Location of the Order of Malta met at the corner of Post and Laguna to assist with the St. Mary’s Medical Van at the Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown. The Medical Van was originally a gift from the Order of Malta and has been supported by us through the years. It provides a variety of medical services at different locations throughout the City during the year. Helping with such tasks as Registration, Supervision, Patient Direction and Information were Mimi Otto, Carl Nolte, Pat Holsten, Anne Dido, Mary and Terry O’Brien, Jane Waal and Marybeth Barrett.

Previously, the group had undergone special training at a Mass and dinner at the hospital.

Even though it was a wet and cold day, we had a wonderful time interacting with the other volunteers and medical staff from the hospital as well as the many people who came by. Any one interested in joining us in the future can call Marybeth Barrett (415-665-5157) for further information.

  New Vice Chair, Hospitaller Committee

It is my particular pleasure to announce that Terrance Barry has accepted Gene Payne’s and my offer to become Vice Chair of the Hospitaller Committee effective July 1, 2007. This assignment will give Terrance the opportunity to participate with Gene over the next months, as Gene did with me, in becoming prepared to become the Hospitaller on January 1, 2009 when Gene retires.

Terrance has been a recognized leader and great performer for the Western Association and particularly in the hospitaller field. Let us all welcome Terrance and support him in his new assignment.

Confraternally yours,

Richard B. Madden
