Like the Catholic Church as a whole, the Order of Malta has a twofold purpose: the glorification of God and the sanctification of her members. Defense of the faith and service to the sick and the poor are the most evident practical works of the Order, but these are undergirded by the hunger in our members to live a deep, rich spiritual life. All members of the Order are encouraged to participate in the sacramental life of the Church, to pray the Liturgy of the Hours and the Rosary, and to be actively involved in the liturgical life of their parishes. There are regular days of recollection and a monthly celebration of the Mass provided for members regionally. Central to life of our Association is the annual Lourdes pilgrimage, which, along with being of great assistance to the malades, is a profound spiritual experience for the Knights and Dames.
Members of the Order are encouraged to deepen their knowledge of the Catholic faith, and in a special way to treasure and propagate familiarity with The Catechism of the Catholic Church. This charge has been given to the Order by the Holy Father himself.
The desire for an ever-deepening spiritual life has led several in our association to petition to be Knights and Dames in obedience. The process of entering into obedience demands two periods of retreat, and once in obedience members of the Sub-priory participate in an annual retreat.
To assist in the many spiritual aspects of its life, the Association draws on the services of a devoted cadre of chaplains, who, along with their ordinary pastoral responsibilities, provide sacramental celebrations, retreats and days of recollection, and spiritual assistance to the members of the Association.
