There are three classes of celebration,
viz. Solemnity, Feast and Memorial. The last can either be obligatory
or optional memorials. They are shown in the Ordo as follows:
SOLEMNITIES ARE UNDERLINED & IN CAPITALS
FEASTS ARE IN CAPITALS
Obligatory Memorials are shown in lower case
Optional Memorials are shown in the same way as above,
but with an option (viz. or)
Prayers appropriate for use in praying the Divine Office are shown
for each of the Order's celebrations, as cited in the Supplement
to the Roman Missal of the Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes
and of Malta
(Commemorations are shown in parentheses where the 2005 calendar
precludes the formal addition of a celebration on that date specific
to the Order)
There are two symbols used:
+ indicates a Holy Day
of Obligation
** indicates a celebration
specific to the Order, and that the Supplement
to the Roman Missal of
the Order of St John of Jerusalem of Rhodes
and of Malta should be
used for Mass
Notes on the Calendar of the
Order
(from the Supplement to the Roman Missal for the Sovereign Military
Order of Malta)
In churches of the Order of Malta, the proper Calendar of the
Order should be observed, with the texts provided.
A priest of the Order who celebrates Mass in any other church
(a) can observe the proper Calendar on ferias per annum and on memoriae
ad libitum outside Advent, the Christmas octave and Lent;
(b) must follow the calendar of the church where he is celebrating
Mass with a congregation on solemnities, Sundays, weekdays of Advent,
Christmas and Lent, feasts and obligatory memorials; if the Mass
is without a congregation, he can choose the proper Calendar (cf.
G.I.R.M. nos. 315-316).
If a meeting of the Order is held in a church which does not belong
to it, on the
day of a feast proper to the Order, the proper Calendar can be followed,
except on Sundays and holy days of obligation (cf. Cong. for Divine
Worship, Instruction Actio pastoralis, 15th May 1969, no.2d).
Where it is the custom, the Prayer of the Order is said before
the closing rites of Mass.
Frequent celebration of Mass for vocations to the Order and for
its deceased members is encouraged.
